During the 11th century, Norwich was the largest city inEnglandafter London and one of the most important places in the kingdom. Until theIndustrial Revolution, Norwich was the capital of the most populous county in England.

The urban or built-up area of Norwich had a population of 213,166 according to the2011 Census. Itis the fourth most densely populated local-government district in theEast of England, with 3,480 people per square kilometre (8,993 per square mile).In May 2012, Norwich was designated England's firstUNESCOCity of Literature.
